Smart Life

Use SMART goals to pass Tough Times

The more effective than any of us can do now is focus on our goals – define them, refine them to reflect changing realities, test to see if they remain realistic and relevant, and act to achieve them.

It's difficult. The steady pace of news – about the economy, about elections, about man's inhumanity to man – is delivered with passion by so many talking heads in the round of 24 additional hours can actually divert attention from the really important things.

Rudyard Kipling in his poem "If" has a verse:

"If you can keep your head while around you are losing, and blaming you … "

The last verse of the poem is as follows:

"Then you will be a man my son "

Rudyard Kipling lived from December 1865 to January 1936. Had he lived today, I will bet on the last line of "if" reads "So being a leader my son or my daughter"

An example of how fear and negative people have become events that appears to recently in a letter to the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal. It was written by a New York attorney who feels, while appearances are the same, and people continue consuming 900 million dinners in fancy restaurants, as a nation, are in denial. She believes that America has lost its place in the world that no longer are the engine final trade we have, we can never take back, there is economic catastrophe and the reality that has not yet sunk in. and then admits who has no experience or expertise in things financial or economic, she writes that she was so surprised by his conclusions that he awoke at 2 am at his mother's E-Mail to tell you to take all the money left in the stock market and investing in silver, or precious metals, or the mattress. Talk about losing your head! Unfortunately, has plenty of company. His emotional state was affected by what happens. It can be contagious – is contagious. It is a contagion You Want to avoid.

It is caused by fear – an acronym for "fantasies Events / Experiences Appearing Real."

And when fear is established, people can be detained — mobilized more or less who feel they must act – to something – anything – like the attorney telling her mother to act and put their money in cash – or the mattress. I hope your mom did not follow this advice.

I read that editorial transaction just before the race I took off a mile 5 days / walk. Halfway I realized I spent my time thinking and worrying about the political impact of the next president, the impact of the credit crunch and sub-risk loans. The realization that I was doing what made me stop – that made me wonder what the hell was he doing? I was yielding to the contagion. I worked into a lather of things I had no control and can not concentrate my mind on the important things in my life. And I suspect I have plenty of company

How to overcome these negative emotions, avoid that contagion and move forward? SMART goals provide focus on the main things. Goals that are intelligent, an acronym for Specific / Simple, measurable, achievable, relevant / realistic, and time frame we can scrape the ceiling and keep us pointed in the right direction. The goals must be modified in May – no one should suggest that today's events should be ignored – but not a positive exercise in reality?

Replace the hysterical talk we hear in the news about having to live in our cars – the lack of access to our funds because financial institutions have failed – the loss of savings or jobs work. We will be subjected to negative news, such as extreme for a long period – is what the media about life. But for most of us, hanging there, not give in to despair and fear, not selling and putting what's left in the mattress is what to do.

Two tips that can help you:

1 – In Og Mandino's book "The Greatest Salesman in the World", advises when things are good or bad, or indifferent – remember "will happen." True. It is important not to let circumstances and events beyond our control end to control our lives and forces us to make decisions on fear rather than reality hard headed.

2 – Dale Carnegie in "How to stop worrying and start living," offers another piece of advice that are so important nowadays. Advises, when faced with stress, to "live life in compartments daytight." I live today and work today, closes the door was closed yesterday and tomorrow and the future take care itself. With all the negative things that revolve around live daytight compartments creates focus. And SMART goals help ensure that the effort daytight put into compartments focuses on some important points.

Use objectives to guide the positive effort of the things you can do – and identify and act on opportunities and possibilities that are sure to arise.

If you do not have SMART goals for yourself, take time to develop them. It can be difficult when starts, but only focus on three to five most important things in life. Watch the cloud of negativity and doubt be replaced by positive energy and motivation to perform. Use SMART goals to not let the events and people wear. Start today – is the only compartment daytight you.
